John Alton Dubbels, 84. passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, in Goodview, Minnesota.
John was born in Plainview, Minnesota on January 19, 1942, to John A. Dubbels and Eunice Holzer Dubbels. He grew up in Stewartville, Minnesota, and graduated from Stewartville High School, where he was active in athletics, music, and theater. He was a member of the Catholic Church.
Following high school, John proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps for four years, attaining the rank of Lance Corporal. He was honorably discharged in 1965. After his military service, he attended the University of Wisconsin–Stout, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
John began his professional career in engineering before transitioning into the car rental industry. He managed car rental franchises in the San Francisco Bay Area and Santa Cruz, California, before eventually returning to Minnesota. In Rochester, he owned and operated a car rental franchise until his retirement.
On May 20, 1967, John married Kathleen Brockman in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Together they built a life that included time in California and later in Rochester, Minnesota, as well as winters spent in Mexico, and summers at their cabin near Wabasha, Minnesota.
John was deeply committed to his community throughout his life. He was an active member of the Elks for more than 50 years. He also served as a Cubmaster with Scouting America, coached youth soccer, and was a strong supporter of youth hockey.
He enjoyed an active lifestyle and many outdoor pursuits, including boating, water skiing, racquetball, and golf. Above all, he will be remembered as a friendly man of good character who was always ready and willing to help his family, friends, and neighbors.
John is survived by his wife, Kathleen Brockman Dubbels; his sons, Brock Dubbels (Lisa) and Bret Dubbels (Jane Ann); and his grandchildren, Arlo Dubbels, Eli Dubbels, Liam Dubbels, and Rowan Dubbels. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Francis. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Steigerwald.
A private service with military honors was held on July 31, 2026, at Preston Veterans Cemetery in Fillmore County, Minnesota.
John’s generous spirit, steadfast character, and willingness to lend a helping hand will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
