Donald J. Wanek, 88, died Wednesday, July 12, 2023 peacefully in his home. He leaves his wife of 63 years, Jeanette Wanek: his sons Bryan (Renee) Wanek, Bryce (Julie) Wanek and his daughter Brenda (Scott) Stellmaker. 7 grandchildren, Alan, Andrew, Nick, Devan and Paige Wanek, Nicole Thompson and Jessica Amaris-Novak and 4 great grandchildren, Hunter, Ezrah, Maggie and Everly. He was proceeded in death by his parents, John and Hilda Wanek, 2 brothers, Owen and Allen Wanek and his sister Iona (Honey) Ekern.
Don grew up Winona MN. Served in the Army National Guard. His love for cars and motorcycles inspired him to create a car club called the Drag-On’s which to this day is still an active club. He was a craftsman whose hobbies included designing and building cars and boats and model airplanes. He worked for IBM for many years and obtained multiple patents during his engineering career. After retirement he and Jean had many travels across the world and made many new friends. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Don will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at Emmanuel (Oasis) Lutheran Church (3819 18th Ave NW, Rochester, MN 55901) on Thursday, July 27, 2023. Visitation at 2:00pm and service from 3:00-4:00pm.
