Stanley W. Stegemeyer, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died at Shorewood Senior Campus in Rochester, MN on April 11, 2024. He had recently celebrated his 90th birthday.
Stan was born on March 31, 1934 to Ben and Norma Stegemeyer in rural Wabasha County. He graduated from Lake City High School in 1951. He was a veteran of the US Army and served as a paratrooper in the 11th and 82nd Airborne Divisions, until his honorable discharge in 1956.
Stan married Nyla Puppe in 1956 and during their marriage they moved frequently due to Stan’s work. A highlight was their two years spent in France. After Nyla’s death from cancer in 1987, Stan married Catherine McLane and they were together until her death in 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Judy Larkin and Lois Giere.
He is survived by daughter Pamela Hanson (Timothy), son Steven Stegemeyer, stepson Greg Ferguson (Lisa), two granddaughters, Tiffany Smith (Aaron) and Nicole Boyle (Stephen), grandsons Brent Hanson and Jake Hanson (Nida), step-grandson Geoffrey Ferguson, step-granddaughter Charlotte MacMartin, four great-grandchildren (Jamie Smith, Charlie Smith, Rhett Smith, Colin Boyle), one great[1]granddaughter on the way (Lyra Hanson) and many nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by Carol Nelson, who held a special place in his life during his final years in Rochester.
Stan’s entire work career was in computer-related industries, which he loved. He worked at Univac, Control Data, Memorex and Seagate Technology. He had the privilege of working in Europe, Asia, and many domestic locations. He thrived on travel and enjoyed many international trips in retirement. He also was a licensed pilot and owned his own plane. He was a member of Zumbro Lutheran church in Rochester.
A private family graveside service is planned for a later date at Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis. The family wishes to thank the devoted Comfort Health providers at Shorewood Campus and the caring staff of St. Croix Hospice.
Stan was always so kind to Kim and myself. It was so easy to have great conversations with him. We truly treasure the time we had to spend with him and our time spent with him during chance encounters in Minneapolis.
Sorry Pam and Steve for your loss. Your dad did get to the funeral. That was the last time I saw him. After mom passed away I lost your dad’s number cause I had to get a different phone and all my contacts were gone..
Thanks everybody for your kind words and support.
We met Stan through his friend Carol and enjoyed many interesting conversations, adult beverages, and meals together through the years. We have been unable to get together because of Dales health issues the last few years. Enjoyed and will treasure the time spent with Carol and Stan.
Our sincere sympathy
Dale and Jeannine Saari
