Russell H. Koelsch

 

Russell H. Koelsch, born on February 10, 1929, in Douglas, MN, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2024, in Rochester, MN with his loving wife Dolores by his side. He was the beloved son of Merton and Jennie Koelsch of Douglas MN. Russell was preceded in death by brother Ken Koelsch, sister Doris Meyers, daughter-in-law Kathy Koelsch, sonin-law Douglas C. Andersen, granddaughter Naomi Petersson, and many more loving aunts, uncles, and relatives.

Russell is survived by his loving wife of 75 years, Dolores, his son Larry Koelsch (Sandy), and daughters Deb King (Don) and Laurie Valdesuso. He was a devoted grandfather to 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Russell and Dolores (Ostrum) met in a high school biology class and their love story led to a beautiful marriage on September 11, 1948, in Rochester, MN. They shared a lifetime of love and companionship, creating a legacy of family and cherished memories.

Russell dedicated 47 years of service to his career at the Mayo Clinic retiring in 1993. During his career, he kept busy pursuing his passions with unwavering commitment. As a founding member of the Antique Car Club of America – Hiawatha Region, he dedicated over 60 years to actively participating in planning old car tours as well as restoring many antique cars to their original form. He also found joy in singing and traveling worldwide for 30 years with the Rochester Male Chorus. In addition, he was a devoted member of Peace United Church of Christ, where he sang in the choir and served as Treasurer for many years.

By many close to him, Russell was known for his love of brandy Manhattans, Werther’s candy, always ensuring clean windshields for everyone, chopping firewood, daily walks, an endless supply of toothpicks, and spending quality time with his wife. Russell touched the lives of many with his kindness and generosity. His enthusiasm for life and his various hobbies left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

Visitation will be at Peace United Church of Christ, 2nd Ave NE, Rochester MN on June 24th at 10AM followed by a funeral service at 11AM. A light luncheon will follow the service. Burial will be at Douglas Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mayo Hospice, Channel One Regional Food Bank, Peace United Church of Christ or to a cause close to your heart.

A very special thanks is extended to the Mayo Clinic Hospice Nurses and Homestead Long Term Caregivers for their compassionate care and support during Russell’s final days. Russell H. Koelsch will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of love, dedication, and kindness will continue to inspire and bring comfort to those who hold him dear in their hearts.
