Kay Fomon

Dear Kay,
I have loved you since the first time your emerald eyes held my gaze. We married, had children then grandchildren. For 44 years we shared our lives together. The adventure of living, laughing and loving each other was more than I could ever imagine. You touched the lives of so many people, your patients, friends, and family. I will miss you with all my heart.
Your loving husband,
Christopher

Kay Fomon, may you rest in peace.
May 7, 1958 – March 30, 2026

Kay Anne (McMahon) Fomon was born May 7, 1958 in Manchester, Iowa to Harold and Elizabeth McMahon. Kay was one of eight children and was a middle child, but the oldest of the girls. Kay graduated from West Delaware High School in 1976. That fall, she was a freshman at the University of Iowa and met her husband Christopher. They were united in marriage, in Iowa City, in 1981.

Kay was a Radiation Therapist for forty years. Most of her career was at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where she met wonderful co-workers that became life-long friends.

Kay was very proud of her children and loved them very much. Their marriages brought her great joy and grandchildren to dote on. She had a way of making every gathering special.

Kay looked forward to quality time with family and friends from family reunions, to trips with her Manchester girlfriends, Cindy, Julie, Kathy, and Sheila, and afternoon lunches with dear friends in Iowa City talking about life, children, or planning events. She was the definition of kindness making everyone feel welcome and important.

Living so close to Kinnick Stadium, Kay would walk to Iowa football games and always cheer on the Hawkeyes. Kay especially enjoyed following Iowa women’s basketball and gymnastics teams, and more recently, the Indiana Fever. She loved to read, play Scrabble, watch sunsets over the farm houses, and sunrises over Lake Michigan.

During retirement, Kay found great joy playing with her grandchildren. She loved teaching them games, taking them to the park and swimming pool, following their sporting events, and everyone’s favorite pastime was when she would read book after book.

Kay is survived by husband Christopher Fomon. Children; Eric (Alyssa) Fomon of Maineville, Ohio and Heather (Spencer) Coulter of Waukee, Iowa. Grandchildren; Mason and Asher Fomon, and Eli and Natalie Coulter. Brothers and Sister, Michael (Gina) McMahon of Hayward, California, Susan (Patrick) Hayes of Boulder, Colorado, James (Lynn) McMahon of Algona, Iowa, and Jeffrey (Jacqueline) McMahon of Las Vegas, Nevada. She is also survived by her Aunt Dolores Callahan and many loving nieces, nephews, and brothers- and sisters-in-law.

A gathering for family and friends will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Memorial donations may be made to Table to Table.
